The biggest event since the Ponoka Stampede! CPKC’s 2025 Holiday Train makes a stop in Camrose, enroute to Lacombe and Red Deer. While chasing the train across central Alberta, I got to see first hand how much of a draw this train has. Every crossing, in every small town had people waiting to see it come through. They may not have been going to the concert, but the train is a clearly part of people’s Christmas tradition.

Railfanning in a location where two rail lines operate in close proximity is a blessing and a curse. Sometimes the trains come at the same time and you can’t be in position for both. Figuring that CPKC 577-117 and CN X 11651 18 would converge in the Keppel area, I picked a location where I thought they’d meet to try for a drone shot. Down on ground level, I had to pick one railway or the other… I set up on the CPKC Hardisty Sub, a thousand feet north of the CN Watrous Sub - CN trains here are plentiful, CPKC are not. With CN arriving first, I flew the drone eastward alongside X 11651 18 hoping there would be a tailend remote. As luck would have it, the 3310 was facing westward and CPKC 577-117 came into view through a cut in the farm fields. My timing was a few moments off, the drone doesn’t move a mile a minute like the train does! Not quite the shot I wanted, but not bad for a guess of where two trains would meet. I guess I’ll have to head back out to the Biggar area and try again next year. X 11651 18: CN 3941, CN 3310 – DP 1x0x1 – 125 cars CPKC 577-117: CP 8009, KCS 4801 – 128 cars

“A long forgotten, lonely cairn of stones” - Lyrics from Stan Rogers’ song “Northwest Passage” came to mind while awaiting the arrival of VIA’s Canadian at Dalehurst, Alberta. You may recognize the name, as the location of the 1986 Hinton disaster, where the eastbound Super Continental, collided head-on with CN 413, on the single track just west of Dalehurst. 23 people died and 71 were injured in the incident, likely caused by medical distress and crew fatigue. This led to major changes to the Canadian railway industry with new rest rules for trains crews and reset safety controls being mandated on locomotives. 39 years later, nature has reclaimed the derailment site, with no visible scars on the land; the only reminder is a small trackside monument, visible to the left of the conductor of CN G 87541 12. With no public access, a long forgotten, lonely cairn of stones is all that remains to commemorate the tragedy that occurred nearly two decades ago in the foothills of Alberta.

New power, newer track. Brand new CN 8344 is relegated to work train service, handling an 88 car Herzog ballast train from McAbee Pit on the Ashcroft Sub. W 90451 15 is sitting on the “construction track” between Dalehurst and Pedley, part of the major double tracking project on the Edson Sub, which will see double track extended between Hargwen and Galloway and Dalehurst and Pedley. This will alleviate the most serious capacity constraint in Western Canada, as trains work towards the Obed Summit. Don’t believe me? Go watch a 30,000 ton grain train grind up the mountain through Medicine Lodge at 0.45HPT on the single track!
